We are committed to sustainable growth, focusing on three key areas: Climate and Nature, Sustainable Growth, and Better Life. Recognizing the urgency to mitigate climate impacts, Syensqo aims for climate neutrality in Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 and a 25% reduction in Scope 3 emissions by 2030 (from a 2021 baseline). These goals are part of our On Planet Goal, our sustainability roadmap.
Procurement Climate Strategy
Our procurement processes and strategies aim to create sustainable business value in collaboration with our suppliers, with the objective of decarbonizing our supply chain. Where does your role as a supplier in our climate journey begin?
[1] Reference year is 2021
[2] Focus 5 categories of Scope 3 emissions: (a) purchased goods and services (b) fuel-and energy-related activities (c) processing of sold products (d) use of sold products and (e) end-of-life treatment of sold products
Climate Pledge
Syensqo has launched a Climate Pledge - a mutual agreement with at least our top CO2-emitting 70 suppliers, who account for 80% of the group’s GHG emissions from raw materials purchased - with the aim of creating more sustainable value chains across our markets. Through the Climate Pledge, as a Syensqo’s supplier you will commit to play a key role in Syensqo’s decarbonization efforts. Specifically we invite you to:
- Set up a roadmap & milestones associated to reduce carbon footprint of products supplied (operations & suppliers).
- Propose low-carbon products and researching alternatives.
- Set science-based targets aligned with the 1.5 degrees trajectory.
In return, as Syensqo we are committed to:
- Embed raw material carbon Footprint and scope 3 impact in RFQ process and market allocation.
- Appoint resources to support & challenge suppliers in their decarbonisation journey.
- Develop strategic partnership with suppliers which commit to science-based targets aligned with the 1.5 degrees trajectory.
We will be appointing resources to actively support and challenge our suppliers in our joint decarbonization journey. Furthermore, we aim to forge strategic partnerships with suppliers who commit to science-based targets aligned with the 1.5°C trajectory, ensuring sustainability is at the core of procurement at Syensqo.
Suppliers' Role in Our Climate Journey
Suppliers play a pivotal role in Syensqo's decarbonization journey.
Your collaboration is essential in enabling us to achieve our targeted emission reductions and contribute to global sustainability goals.
We encourage you to actively participate by focusing on three key areas.
Sharing emissions data fosters transparency and accountability, enabling us to understand our value chain's full impact. We measure the CO2 equivalent of our activities using the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF). Different from your Ecovadis Assessment and your TfS (Together for Sustainability) Audit, PCFs enable us to work together through transparency and accountability: to understand our value chain's full impact, we need to measure the CO2 equivalent of our activities using the Product Carbon Footprint (PCF).
The PCF quantifies total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions throughout the lifecycle of goods and services, including material acquisition, preprocessing, manufacturing, distribution, storage, usage, and disposal, measured in kilograms of CO2 equivalent. It is the quantity of greenhouse gas that was emitted to manufacture a product. The PCF is one component of the larger Life Cycle Assessment. It is expressed in CO2e, meaning CO2 equivalent, which is a standard to express the total impact of various GHG in terms of the amount of CO2 that would have the same effect on global warming. It is NOT directly related to the number of carbon on the molecule. It measures the emissions released from Cradle to Gate. Sharing this data helps determine carbon footprints and enables targeted reduction measures.
Syensqo uses the TfS-launched Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) Guideline for calculating Product Carbon Footprints for Syensqo raw materials. To ensure accuracy and consistency in our calculations, we ask you to follow the comprehensive guideline based on the TfS methodology.
Consultants for PCF Calculations
If external expertise is needed in calculating your Product Carbon Footprint, here are some organizations recognized for their proficiency in PCF assessments and familiar with Syensqo's requirements. This list includes consultants who meet our standards, but you are not limited to these options.

The PCF Exchange Solution: SiGREEN
Syensqo has adopted SiGREEN, an innovative tool from Together For Sustainability (TfS). SiGREEN is a software-as-a-service platform to facilitate the exchange and management of emissions data. It's a game-changer for handling Product Carbon Footprint (PCF) data, making the process more efficient, more secure and accurate. It's a powerful tool that helps us, and our partners, make real strides in reducing our carbon footprint. SiGREEN is available for FREE to our suppliers.
What is TfS ?
TfS is a global procurement-driven initiative that improves the sustainability performance of chemical companies and their suppliers. The members are chemical companies committed to making sustainability improvements within their own – and their suppliers’ – operations. You can learn more about them in TfS website.
As a Syensqo Supplier you can have access to the TfS Academy and start to learn more about PCF calculations and how to use SiGREEN.
Strategy
- Set Baseline and Roadmap to improve: Establish a baseline for current PCFs and set specific, measurable goals for reducing PCFs with short-term and long-term milestones. → Commit to SBTI or other science-based targets aligned with the 1.5 degrees trajectory.
- Actionable Strategies: Develop strategies to reduce emissions and to develop low-carbon alternatives for raw materials and production processes.
Operation
- Engage your suppliers: Integrate emissions metrics in procurement standards and work with suppliers to address their emissions.
- Push Ecosystems: Engage in certification, in applying sector best practices, traceability.
- Empower your company: Implement a low carbon governance, align targets and incentives to emission reduction, train your team on sustainability.
Tfs Academy has a large collection prepared to help you in this phase, containing guidelines, training and ideas that can support you on your action plan.
To follow up your action plan, considering the continuous improvement of your practices is crucial. Joining forces and working transparently will be key to achieving our common decarbonization goals.
To achieve this, these are some key actions based on best practices you could consider:
- Continuously review and update your climate strategy based on new data, emerging technologies, and best practices. This ensures that your approach remains relevant and effective.
- Implement continuous monitoring and establish a reporting mechanism to communicate progress. Regularly assess and report how your actions impact the business lines you supply to Syensqo.
- Share updates on your climate strategy and practices to the external world, collaborate with us and work together to find innovative solutions and opportunities.
Let’s create the future of the value chains together!
