Sustainable Portfolio

Our sustainable portfolio commitment

At Syensqo, we are advancing science to support the transition to a circular, low-carbon economy. Our portfolio is shifting toward renewable, recyclable, and lower-emission solutions aligned with key industry trends such as electrification, lightweighting, and the bio-economy.

This transition is core to our business strategy; meeting evolving customer needs, reducing risk, and driving long-term value across critical sectors.

Advancing circularity

Researchers at Syensqo

Enabling circularity is a key pillar of our portfolio transformation. We are creating materials and processes that use renewable or recycled inputs, last longer, and are easier to reuse or recycle. Our ambition is to increase the share of net sales from products that enable circularity to 18% by 2030.1 In 2024, circular sales represented 16% of total net sales.

Scaling sustainable solutions

We are accelerating the shift to a low-carbon, resource-efficient economy by focusing our innovation pipeline on sustainable solutions. In 2024, 63% of our net sales and 80% of our research & innovation were sustainable solutions in accordance with our Sustainable Portfolio Management (SPM) Framework.

Our SPM Framework allows us to integrate sustainability considerations into business decisions such as portfolio management, Research and Innovation (R&I) projects and investments. Using a robust and transparent methodology, it assesses both the environmental footprint of our products and the broader social and market context in which they are used. This ensures credible, forward-looking decisions that align business performance with long-term sustainability goals.

These insights also guide our portfolio development. For example, we offer lightweight thermoplastic composites that reduce aircraft fuel consumption and emissions by up to 20%, enabling cleaner mobility. We support the energy transition through solutions for EV batteries, green hydrogen, and electrification. In beauty and personal care over 80% of Syensqo’s ingredients for hair and skin care products are derived from natural origin, reflecting growing demand from our customers.

Portfolio transformation is central to our growth strategy, driving value for customers, reducing exposure to regulatory and supply chain risks, and positioning Syensqo as a key enabler of sustainable transformation across multiple industries.

1. Circular sales, based on Ellen MacArthur Foundation Circulytics Methodology, include products: (1) Designed to encourage longer use than the industry standard in practice and at scale; (2) Made of bio-based, recycled-based, by product and carbon capture-based  raw materials, or produced with renewable energy; (3) designed for re-use or to increase the recycling yield (quantity and quality) of the customer’s products.

Our scientists are focused on expanding the share of solutions in our portfolio that are recyclable, bio-based or have a lower carbon footprint – without compromising on performance. Innovation plays a vital role in addressing sustainability challenges and, together with our partners, we’re building circular value chains and accelerating the shift to more sustainable products.

The SPM Framework also supports our efforts to actively reduce substances that may trigger concern.

We are focused on phasing out the use of fluorosurfactants from the PFAS family of chemicals for the production of our fluoropolymers. Since 2019, we have quadrupled our investment in research & innovation to invent a new polymerization process using non-fluorosurfactant technologies. Our success in developing non-fluorosurfactant technologies in the United States at our West Deptford, New Jersey facility was a major step in this journey, and we are now working toward manufacturing nearly 100% of our fluoropolymers without fluorosurfactants in Spinetta Marengo, Italy by 2026. Further information on use of hazardous substances as it relates to our product portfolio is found here.

Holding ourselves accountable

The SPM Framework is recognized as consistent with the Product Sustainability Assessment (PSA) framework created by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD). It is also considered a key strategic tool for decision-makers, not just by Syensqo but also by other leading organizations.

Additionally, the SPM Framework is aligned with the European Commission’s “Safe and Sustainable by Design” initiative, which was created to support safe and sustainable innovation of chemicals and materials.

We work with non-governmental organizations such as the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, which is a network of industry leaders at the forefront of the circular economy transition. Syensqo is a strategic partner of the foundation, committed to driving systemic change and enabling the move toward a circular economy that benefits people, businesses, and the natural world.
