Durability is crucial in direct-to-metal (DTM) coatings applications. DTM coatings are often exposed to harsh conditions that can negatively impact durability and aesthetics. To tackle this challenge, Syensqo introduced Sipomer® MAC, a high-performance specialty monomer that enhances adhesion and corrosion protection to extend the lifespan of coatings. Sipomer® MAC’s unique attributes make it an ideal solution for DTM applications in C3 medium- and C4 high-corrosion environments and specialty coatings applications.
 

Sipomer® MAC: Next-Level Adhesion and Corrosion Resistance

Sipomer® MAC is designed to improve latex dispersion stability. Its superior bonding capability ensures durability and enables the application of premium finishes on a variety of substrates, including metals, glass and concrete. By enhancing water resistance and maintaining exceptional gloss retention under extreme conditions, Sipomer® MAC ensures coatings remain resilient in high-humidity settings while preserving their aesthetic appeal. Its broad compatibility with waterborne and solventborne systems allows formulators to work across diverse polymer chemistries, including all-acrylic, styrene/acrylic and polyurethane systems. Moreover, its low usage requirements (0.5-2.0% based on total monomer, or “BOTM”) result in a cost-effective solution.

These capabilities make Sipomer® MAC a standout choice for applications such as automotive refinish coatings, maintenance coatings, rail and container coatings and bus and truck coatings, where superior adhesion, corrosion resistance and finish quality are critical.

Sipomer® MAC offers protection to the corrosive categories C3 and C4.
It allows excellent corrosion resistance with conventional surfactants. The performance is even better for Sipomer® MAC in combination with Reactsurf® 2490, exhibiting the best corrosion resistance versus market specialty waterborne acrylic and monomer.
 

Sipomer® MAC - Excellent water resistance

Waterborne coatings formulated with Sipomer® MAC, especially when paired with Reactsurf® 2490, exhibit outstanding water resistance. Reactsurf® 2490 contributes strong blistering resistance and superior adhesion performance in water immersion tests. Together, these additives ensure that coatings maintain their resilience in high-humidity and water-exposure environments.

Sipomer® MAC significantly improves adhesion to a variety of substrates, including aluminum, cold-rolled steel, and concrete, ensuring robust and durable bonds in DTM applications. When combined with Reactsurf® 2490, it delivers superior adhesion performance, especially under challenging conditions. Furthermore, Reactsurf® 2490 enhances adhesion optimization for substrates such as hot-dipped galvanized steel, ensuring compatibility and durability across diverse formulations.
