How Specialty Emulsifiers for Metalworking fluid Contribute to Greater Foam Control

The metalworking fluid industry continues to observe the increased use of smaller reservoirs as the new standard. This trend pushes OEMs and formulators to rely on high-pressure, high-speed sprays given the condensed work area. Inevitably, these high-pressure sprays produce significantly more foam in metalworking procedures. High foam levels in metalworking are extremely problematic, as they can flood equipment and make it difficult to see the tool and the workpiece, which can inhibit manufacturing efficiency.

Considering the increased use of high-speed sprays in metalworking processes, formulators need to use low foam emulsifiers to develop metalworking fluids delivering enhanced foam control. Syensqo’s specialty emulsifiers for metalworking fluids provide formulators with a selection of anti-foam ingredients that can mitigate these challenges.

Advanced Chemistry To Develop Anti-Foam Emulsifiers

Anti-foam emulsifiers require the manipulation of the molecular designs in essential alkoxylated fatty alcohols. The primary challenge faced by Syensqo’s chemists in this process is to develop a finished additive that significantly reduces foam while maintaining the expected standard of emulsification. Additionally, the availability of materials is integral to the project, as formulators and distributors are often restricted to specific supply chains and budgets.

Accordingly, Syensqo’s experts have identified that the insertion of phosphates, ethoxylates (EO) and propoxylates (PO) groups into short-chain alcohol at differing degrees can deliver a variety of desired results. PO insertion can be used for exceptional foam control and the EO addition facilitates more favorable classification and labeling for the end product. By fine-tuning EO and PO quantities, Syensqo is able to deliver a new generation of low-foaming emulsifiers based on commonly and globally available raw materials and renewable resources.

Sustainable Additives For Enhanced Foam Control

Syensqo’s portfolio of emulsifiers for enhanced foam control is made up of several unique and versatile additives. These specialty foam inhibitors are developed with sustainable, non eco-toxic ingredients and are readily biodegradable.

Specifically, Lubrhophos® LF 800 and Antarox® CST/77 serve as optimal alternatives to cetyl oleyl based additives and demonstrate outstanding defoaming performance. Designed primarily for cutting fluids and hot rolling fluids, our innovative selection of emulsifiers provides formulations with good anti-wear, corrosion protection and staining-inhibition properties. These ultra low-foam emulsifiers also can be tailored for improved low-temperature performance or to improve hard water stability and limit soap formation. Additionally, Antarox® FM/14 and Alkamuls® VO/2005 complete this impressive portfolio, as they are especially well-suited for non eco-toxic foam control formulations for metalworking fluids.
