Fluorosurfactant-Free Solutions for Architectural and Industrial Paints
As environmental concerns and regulations push the paint and coatings industry to phase out fluorosurfactants, finding alternatives that maintain critical performance properties—like early hot block resistance—is a significant challenge.
Developed as an alternative to fluorosurfactants in waterborne architectural paint formulations, Rhodoline® HBR is an innovative product that helps prevent freshly painted surfaces from sticking. The product’s unique properties enable decorative paints to meet increasingly stringent regulatory requirements while also providing exceptional early hot block resistance without inhibiting performance.
Block resistance refers to the ability of a freshly painted surface to resist sticking to other surfaces when pressed together under conditions of temperature, humidity and pressure. Achieving this is especially challenging in semi-gloss and gloss paints, deep base paints and low VOC paints.
Rhodoline® HBR: Delivering More Than Hot Block Resistance
In addition to exceptional block resistance, Rhodoline® HBR provides excellent dirt pick up and stain resistance and very good wetting properties. Its fluorosurfactant-free and APE-free composition, along with its low VOC levels, ensure it meets stringent sustainability and regulatory requirements. Suitable for various types of formulations, Rhodoline® HBR provides reliable performance and compatibility across a variety of lattices and neutral-based paints.
Key Performance Data
Superior Performance to Benchmarks
Rhodoline® HBR was benchmarked against both fluorosurfactants and non-ionic wetting agents, where it delivered comparable performance in most metrics and outperformed alternatives in early hot block resistance.
Hot Block Resistance (24-hour dry time)
Tests show that Rhodoline® HBR achieves excellent oven/hot block resistance within just 24 hours of drying, performing on par with, or better than, traditional fluorosurfactants.
Dirt Pick-Up Resistance
Formulations using Rhodoline® HBR show significant improvements in dirt pick-up resistance, ensuring that paints maintain their aesthetic and functional properties over time.
Wetting and Compatibility
Rhodoline® HBR demonstrates superior wetting capabilities, ensuring even distribution across a wide range of latexes and delivering strong performance in waterborne systems. It works particularly well in challenging systems like semi-gloss and low-VOC paints.
