Main applications and usages for hydrogen power generation
Syensqo's solutions drive hydrogen production. Our high-performance materials find use across various large-scale industrial electrolyzer components, from the core to the balance of stack (BOS), to the balance of plant (BOP) applications.
Alkaline Electrolysis (AEC)
Alkaline electrolysis is used for large capacity operations with multi-megawatt stacks and employs a basic liquid electrolyte of about 70-100°C. For alkaline electrolyzer diaphragms, we offer Udel® PSU as a polymeric binder for the matrix of microporous Zirconia. It works well in alkaline environments as it has excellent resistance properties and is stable over a wide pH range. For cell frames, Udel® PSU and Ryton® PPS are frequently used. These materials provide excellent resistance properties and mechanical performance and support lightweight as well as high-volume series production.
Proton Exchange Membrane Electrolysis (PEMEC)
PEM electrolyzers provide exceptionally high power density and efficiency, enabling compact designs and smaller system footprints. PEMECs utilize a solid polymer electrolyte, and operate at increased temperatures and, possibly, increased pressures of 5 MPa or above. PEMECs are associated with intrinsic high-purity hydrogen production. For proton exchange membrane electrolyzers, we offer our Aquivion® ionomers for membranes and electrode binders. Aquivion® ionomers offer good/high proton conductivity with superior mechanical, thermal and chemical stability, widening the electrolyzer operating window.
